Community Management 101 – Listen to your technicians

Saturday, 14 January, 2012

What exactly is the job of the community manager? What specifies a community manager? Well, let’s put it this way. The community manager is the face of your company in the community. The one who makes sure the users in the community are happy. You keep them updated with news, keep them entertained with contests and you also take feedback. Of course you also listen to the other people in the company to make sure everything goes smooth. What happens if the community manager is a pure asshole with no care about the users in the community and how the community is going? The community goes to SHIT.

On professional websites there is always one, two, three or more community managers. These are the administrators of the forum and will with the help of either volunteer moderators or paid moderators make sure your forum is free from spam and any other troublesome users that only registers to troll and flame your userbase. On private websites the owner could be seen as the community manager, he pays for the hosting and sometimes he also got knowledge with the back-end of this website. If this is not the case then he got either friends to help him out with the back-end server stuff or it gets handled by the server host. So what happens if your forum fucks up? You let the technicians take care of it and stay away because you might end up fucking it up even more.

Recently a case of this actually happened, the owner isn’t exactly what I would consider a good owner. Disregarding the plans his technicians have put together to get his forum back up running and doing his own shit while he has absolutely no clue how to do it. Know what happened then? Well the forum did come back up for a little bit, ended up straining the webserver even more and fucked it up for every other person who got hosting on the server. This is a true story and happened these recent days, I have taken the story from other blogs of the technicians. End result? Technicians got fed up with the retarded owner and decided to stop helping him, if he does not want their help then why offer it, especially since the help is for free!

Why would you give a total “fuck you” in the face of the people who are trying to help you? The people who knows this shit better than you do and are actually able to fix this without fucking everything up more than it should be? Yea sure the owner pays the bill but what is a community without actually having the goddamn website and forum up and running and a happy userbase? On top of that, webhosts will kick you the fuck out if you strain their servers so much that other people being hosted on it gets problems with their websites too. I have seen hosts do it many times, either that or they tell you to upgrade to a plan that is either a VPS (if previously on shared) or to dedicated (if you run VPS already). Might not always be the case but yea, that’s one thing that can happen.

No people, this is not how you run a community. It will bite you in the ass because the people who are trying to help you will not exactly show any mercy by not telling the world what kind of incompetent fuck you are. The story always gets out no matter what. The technicians posted the stories themselves, I am helping them by spreading the word. Other people are of course too spreading the word. I have been a user of this community for a couple of years now, apparently it was very good back in the days then everything went downhill. The amount of quality posts went down as most posters just came to dick around in the local spam forum, you know the place where you can do basically anything without getting in trouble for it. Then that shit gets out of hand, infests every other forum there and people get butthurt about stuff. As the owner/community manager it is YOUR responsibility to make sure these things do not happen. Of course by making the spam forum in the first place you keep spam away from other forums, but wait, there’s a better solution. DO NOT MAKE A FUCKING SPAM FORUM!

I have run forums before, I run one at the moment even though it isn’t popular or in much use but that doesn’t mean I don’t have some experience when it comes to this stuff. I have helped out managing forums with thousands of users, hundred of users or just a couple of users. Some forums have died due to a shitty community or just a simply dead community while others survived and are still living happily these days even after I left them. Some forums had their own spam forum to keep forum games and such away, I personally do not mind forum games in the General Discussions forum depending on what kind of game it is, why make an own place for that? General Discussions is for absolutely anything as long as it’s not just herpderping around, that is considered spam and will be locked and moved to a trash bin forum (hidden) or simply deleted on sight.

I will admit, the title of this entry is misleading, but hell it made you click didn’t it? By the way, the recent happening I have been talking about is about DoujinStyle and the shitty way the owner handled the situation of the forum database taking up too much shit because of the heavy load from the spam forum. See? A spam forum only brings issues. You may not agree with everything I write here, and some of the stuff I’ve written might be way off but hell it’s some suggestions and shit. Want to run a forum or work as the social media/community manager at a company? Then don’t do stupid shit.

First Impressions Anime Winter 2011/2012 Season

Friday, 13 January, 2012

I have taken up a couple of shows this season and here are my first impressions with these shows. Remember that for most shows so is only the first episode out and this “first impression” entry does not mean the whole show is either awesome or complete shit. IT’S A FUCKING FIRST IMPRESSION! Just so it’s made clear. All based on the FIRST episode of the season! Needed to do it one more time for good measure.

Kill Me Baby – Random show with humor, I am not really sure if it got a real plot or if it will continue with the same weirdass stuff it had in the first episode. I will be honest I laughed at it so I might continue watching it just for the cheap laughs and weird comedy, because hey I like that kind of stuff. The show might of course just have a comedic non-story start and then jumps on the story from the second episode and forwards. If you like comedy and randomness then this series is certainly for you though, the artstyle is…Well interesting I guess. Poor Yasuna though, always getting smacked around by Sonya when she does normal friend things like giving her a pat on the shoulder. On the other hand, Sonya is a perfect bottle opener.

Senki Zesshou Symphogear – A show about singing, mecha musume, people dying and blood. You know what? I like it already because of these points. It also seems to have a Norse mythology theme to it and considering I am Norwegian it just gives me another reason to continue watching the series. Lots of insert songs by Nana Mizuki! For mecha musume lovers then this will definitely be your favorite show this season, it seems to not be ecchi focused either…At least from what I saw in the first episode. I can relate to their war against the Noise, I hate Justin Bieber too.

Zero no Tsukaima F – Many people hate the anime adaption of Zero no Tsukaima because they made it into mostly a pure-ecchi show that didn’t focus on the story from the novels. Well it kinda does but they did take the ecchi too far in the second a third season and let the story be pushed aside. In F however they start relaxed then jump right onto the story to follow the novels. This is also the final Zero no Tsukaima season and it will be awesome to see how this series end, personally I have been a fan of this series. Who knows, I might like the tsundere…Or titelf. J.C. Staff have also improved on their art, it seems more fluid or however I should say it than the former seasons.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes 2 – Continuation from the first season of course. Still without their Toys the Milky Holmes seems to have forgotten who the hell they are. Well, now they’re crazy-ass farmers and don’t you dare fuck with their vegetables because then they will fuck your shit up…Yea it basically keeps the same style and humor from the first series so if you were a fan of that then you should definitely continue watching the second season too. I liked the cuteness of the first series so I will continue watching this.

There are a couple of other series I got in mind too but I am waiting for some better groups to eventually pick them up. No I am not watching HorribleSubs, no I am not watching anything on fucking Crunchyroll because streaming low-quality shit can blow me. Fuck it, I am not gonna support their fucking streaming crap. It’s hard enough to get me to buy anime in the first place because DVD subs are HORRIBLE and the dubs on said DVD’s are even fucking worse. On top of that so does it normally take them fucking forever to release anything over here because they always gotta shove their shitty dubs on it. If DVD/BD in Japan had not been derply expensive I’d buy them directly from there then torrent fansubs. No matter what you say, I have supported the publishers/creators since I bought it. Yes, I wanted to rant a little too since I haven’t done that in a while on my blog.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Friday, 11 November, 2011

Now before people grabs the pitchforks and calls me a hypocrite, I didn’t buy the game so I did not support Activision and their fucking retarded prices, schemes and milking. So go fuck yourself if you were gonna call me out on that, now with that said I am gonna give my honest opinion about the single-player of Modern Warfare 3. I am not hired by some goddamn company, I am not a full-time or freelance journalist and I am not paid by Activision Blizzard to write anything nice about the game, and I actually do have something nice to say about the game. Stuff here might spoil, offend or make you cry like a little fucktard but hey, if you don’t like that shit then stop reading after this paragraph.

As we all know so does Modern Warfare 3 continue after the second game, hell you see a glimpse of what happens after you beat the second game so no shocker there right? Soap lives, everything is fine so let’s jump into the action as Delta Force in the United States. Yes there’s a full-out war still going on but at least the Americans have managed to push the Russians back far enough and with a few more strikes against Wall Street and the Russian fleet outside of Manhattan everything goes well, wooo. Lots of action and of course so is there very little time to get your shit together because there will be a constant stream of bullets wanting to hit you right in the nuts. At least the game isn’t dicking around, while the game itself is about as challenging as the other Call of Duty games it’s at least nice to say America get…Oh wait a minute now, they push the Russians back so let’s jump to Somalia where Soap and the now disavowed Task Force 141 is together with some Russians that certainly do not want Makarov’s company. Soap is quite hurt of course and you take command of a Russian named Yuri, there’s more to him but let’s come back to that later.

Makarov’s Russian forces starts storming in and of course you gotta fight your way out in the streets and hell you even get to control some sort of gun-turret on wheels, hey that was kinda cool because that thing fucking teared shit apart without ever shedding one drop of sweat…not that vehicles can sweat but you get what I mean right? Either way…As every other Call of Duty game out there at the moment you will control several different characters, from the American Delta Force to Russian rebels and even one of the Russian president’s security guards on his airplane when flying to some peace negotiation in Europe. Of course stuff escalates in Europe. Oh by the way, you get to control a father on his family vacation in London filming his wife and daughter getting blown to hell by a detonated bomb, which of course delivers a lovely gas payload in London too, several of them does in fact. As on cue the Russians starts attacking European cities everywhere.

You know, there aren’t many games out there that actually shows the terrorists getting their stuff done right, most of them you save the day before anything happens but most Call of Duty games have done a good thing by showing possible outcomes that can even happen in real life. Yes shit like this is possible and you should always live in constant fear that a charity truck with gas bombs will blow up in your street, you have been warned dude.

The game runs on an upgraded IWEngine and while this does not say much considering these upgrades are very tiny the new engine allows you to see stuff from long range, like when you are sitting on a submarine and are watching jets fly in and give some skyscraper in Manhattan a few rockets in its guts, pieces falling apart while smoking is coming from all over the city there, now that is the kind of impact games should have, think if you were actually living in Manhattan and this really happened? Though New York is known for being the city that always gets trouble though…I mean, every movie and game does it. Anyway, as I said the graphics aren’t anything extraordinary, same old stuff you have seen in the old games with new models and things like that but at least this third installment of the game actually ends the hunt for Makarov…Yes there’s a spoiler incoming.

———THIS WHOLE SECTION IS A FUCKING SPOILER YOU RETARD———
In the very last mission you play as Price himself, together with Yuri and armored to the teeth you go into a hotel/restaurant to catch Makarov, blowing up everything in your path and taking bullets like a freaking boss, of course you do lose the armor after a little bit but it’s fun while it lasts right? Makarov tries to escape, Price hijacks the helicopter, crashes it, Makarov gets the gun but Yuri who had earlier been impaled by an iron pipe or something comes and shoots him, doesn’t kill him however and is killed in the attempt. You perform a couple of quick time events to wrap your rappling line around his throat, chokes him, breaks the class underneath and hang the poor little motherfucker. Finishing it all of with a nice cigarette.
———THIS WHOLE SECTION IS A FUCKING SPOILER YOU RETARD———

What kinda grade do I give the game? I’ll hand it a 4,5/10 or something, the game has its moments but it’s basically the same shit you’ve seen before. Oh by the way, you get to shoot niggers in Somalia…You know what? I am gonna give it a 5/10 just because of that! If I am able to get multiplayer working with a pirated copy I might write about that too, but hell what new do we expect from the multiplayer?

A little bit of new loot

Sunday, 14 August, 2011

I have received a couple of things these recent days and I will soon also receive some music CD’s via a Twitter friend from Comiket 80. EastNewSound and Innocent Key CD’s, that is. I also received my Tenshi PVC yesterday from TEN and I gotta say the figure is just lovely and there are so many photography possibilities with it if you have a little bit of imagination. I do believe one of the ideas actually reveals itself by the photo I am gonna post of the figure.

I have also been out and bought the big tower for my new PC now, which means I have finally managed to get my hands on one more part of the new gaming and general usage PC I am building. I now have the motherboard, GPU, CPU and case which means I lack the RAM, PSU, monitors, HDD’s and the SSD I am planning to have as system drive. I still need about 6,6k Norwegian Kroner to buy this stuff though so it’s most likely gonna take a while to finish it up completely, maybe I can afford more after my birthday the 8th of September? Anyway here comes the pictures.

106m – Mafia March Hare not coming to Comiket 80

Tuesday, 9 August, 2011

Unfortunately the group missed the deadline for submitting their doujinshi for Comiket 80. Reasoning is because of Kuro-San having poor health recently and was unable to draw the remainder of the doujin. Both of them deeply apologize for not being able to finish the doujin for their Japanese fans and I will also apologize on their behalf to fans who waited for this doujin to become available in English. Right now so is it unknown when work will resume and when the doujin will come out, so basically it’s on a hiatus.

I hope Kuro-San will be okay and of course that TEN-San eventually finds a job considering he has been looking for one most of the times I talk to him. In the future there might be a finished version of Mafia March Hare Vol. 1. For now however so will TEN-San still be at C80 with their older doujinshi, Giant Sakuya’s Adventure and SANAE-DON -XTREME- (at least I think so) and they also urge you to buy the doujinshi made by friend of theirs:

・喪失の唐傘(Caakie House委託) 300円
・釣りキチにとり(再販) 400円

Good luck to them and I hope they will have fun at Comiket 80!

If you can read Japanese then there’s less vague information located at TEN-San’s blog here: http://106m-10.sblo.jp/article/47278826.html

Commitment…Does it even exist anymore?

Sunday, 7 August, 2011

Something that I have noticed when joining a project is the lack of commitment by several of the team members. This goes hand in hand with the entry about teamwork I made some time ago but is not exclusively related to that matter. So yea, you join a team and help them out, you do a lot of help and end up being the person helping the owner and all that kind of crap, yes this is pretty much mon0r I am talking about but it can be anything really since I have noticed this everywhere.

When a website grows or a project grows it will sometime require more people to help out, this is when the team starts looking for more individuals that can help out, many people will apply and a few of those will be taken in for a testing period and eventually be accepted into the team. This is where it normally ends up going wrong, they will be active during their trial period, doing the stuff they are supposed to do and finally become an official part of the team and all that stuff. However here comes the problem, suddenly they stop being active, they never tell you where the hell they go and they never pop back up, oh wait sometimes they do pop back up randomly before disappearing again. Most of the time they won’t do anything during their short pop-up time either which can get slight annoying for the owners who trusted this person and decided he qualified to be a part of the team because he seemed like an active person.

At mon0r we have had several people who has joined and done a couple of articles before disappearing off the face of the Earth. Ok well maybe not that bad but they stop being active on the site while we still see them posting on Twitter and such. Many times they won’t even respond to the team either which is fucking annoying as hell. If you signed up for something NO MATTER IF IT’S FUCKING PAID OR NOT then you should show commitment and DO WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. This is a huge issue anywhere and I have even heard the excuse that it’s not paid so there’s no need to really do what is asked for…Uh, yes you actually have to do what you are asked to do because you committed yourself to doing that certain work, if you are a little fucktwit who is unable to do things you signed up for then you might as well get the fuck out because we don’t need people like you. Mind you this is not something that happens often on mon0r but other sites I have been a part of have had this happen very often. An example would be FileFront when I was the Site Manager of one of their network sites, every time I got another staff member on the team to help me out they would end up disappearing without a word. Even if I contacted them I ended up getting an empty promise that they would do something but they ended up never doing it anyway.

What is the point of this entry? Basically this: IF YOU SIGN UP FOR SOMETHING. IF IT IS PAID OR UNPAID YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU SIGNED UP FOR WITHOUT BEING A WHINY LITTLE CUNT. IF YOU DISAPPEAR THEN YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED SO UNLESS THERE’S A FUCKING REASON FOR YOU TO DISAPPEAR AND YOU HAVE ACTUALLY WARNED PEOPLE THAT YOU WILL DO IT. <<– This part certainly need the bolded caps treatment because it’s so fucking important. Some fuckheads doesn’t seem to understand this shit and those are the kind of people you should NEVER have on your team, hell I will be sure to PUBLICALLY put up the names of the people who disappeared from their duties at mon0r and in any other team I end up joining.

Oh yea, since I am already ranting I might as well jump over to another issue. People who joins the team, becomes busy with something and ends up not doing what asked for and even pretends they were never asked about it. YES I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU MIRUUE. There exists no other way to piss me off more than some little cunt who actually has to go around demolishing shit because they couldn’t get the candy they kept whining about. This is exactly what Miruue did by the way when leaving mon0r, he decided to remove the theme and fuck over the site like a little faggot because of a small incident where he was at fault for not doing the shit he signed up for, hell if he just had left then that would be whatever but the kind of shit he did deserves an add in the hitlist book. Fuck off you retarded scumbag and I hope you never get hired to anything that got to to with websites again because of incidents like these, if you are gonna be a little nigger who goes “destroy everything” when you can’t get your candy then fuck the hell off.

Goddamn I hate children.

106m at Comiket 80

Sunday, 5 June, 2011

My friends TEN and Kuro from the doujin circle 106m have completed their qualification for being at Comiket 80 in August and are working hard on their newest doujin, Mafia March Hare. Currently there is no specific information about pricing or the story of this doujin but it’s about Tewi and oldskool mafia awesomeness. They will be at Comiket August 13th, 2011, their booth is located at テ-25a (te-25a) on the East Hall of Tokyo Big sight. Unfortunately because of ZUN’s recent restrictions when it comes to distributing Touhou doujinshi digitally, even when it’s in a legal fashion like DLSite.com so will the new doujin only be sold in physical form, however as far as I can confirm so will there be an official English release of the doujin too for you who want to support 106m and at the same time have something awesome to read!

http://106m-gts.sakura.ne.jp/ – Japanese aren’t known for posting a lot of information on their website, but heck it’s always good to have it bookmarked for announcements since they keep it short and to the point. I wish my friends from 106m good luck with their doujin and I am also looking forwards to see it myself!

Soon Desucon, and some updates

Saturday, 4 June, 2011

It’s now June and it’s only three weeks left until I leave for a weekend to have fun at Desucon, the largest convention for Japan, fantasy and science fiction there is in Norway, and as usual so will I be going as part of the crew, Security for the third year now and as always so will it be plenty of fun helping out with the convention. I’ve already received my crew t-shirt, although the badges were not given out during the crew meeting I attended in Oslo last weekend, however it was pretty fun to meet all the other people in the crew again, I am pretty sure everybody who was there have been crew before, so many people I already know.

June 25th and 26th is when it happens, and apparently the week before that I will be visited by Wkter, he wants to take the IELTS test which is in Oslo the 21st and doesn’t feel like going to Oslo then back to Stavanger then back to Oslo again the week after to attend Desucon, oh well, this will be a fun month then. On another note, my friend who moved to Denmark has decided to move back and therefore I now got my friend back so I can continue derping around and do random crap with him, and just be completely retarded…Yea that.

Netbook GET. Though I mostly use it for stuff related to mon0r.com, like running their Twitter account, I will also use it for live tweeting and live articles during Desucon at mon0r…Well that is if I got time to do such things, Security can be hectic at times.

Why the fuck am I still doing this? I mean come on, I need to make something interesting and this is what I came up with, the mountain on the side there is still not gone and I have been picking on it for fucking ever…Jesus bloody christ on a stick full of shit.

Inatsuka’s version of Afi was finished a month ago, and even though certain people were ungrateful pricks about it I am rather happy with how it looks, even though it isn’t exactly as I wrote it down, though language barriers makes such things happen. On that note I am also working on another mascot and a logo for Rumia Network, the new mascot will be assisting Afi in promoting my website and the services offered there, urf these commissions is gonna end up costing me a million, that’s for sure.

Teamwork…Really?

Saturday, 21 May, 2011

I have been doing quite a bit of things that requires teamwork through the years. In the beginning I was a person who liked doing things by myself, even though I did try several times to get more people to join because I couldn’t do it by myself. The first thing you will notice when getting new people on a team is that they might be troublesome, they might have ideas you do not agree on and try to push you over by for example befriending the higher ups if there are any. Back in 2007-2008 I was a member of the FileFront Network Staff, manager of their World of Warcraft website, however back then I was kind of new to the whole thing so I weren’t exactly awesome at my work, I ended up getting fired from the position after a year or two actually and decided to not re-apply.

I have also joined communities and websites in their startup to help them out, heck why not? If they do it good it’s a good thing but most of these places either disappears off the face of the Earth because of poor leadership or because there is absolutely no teamwork there, this has happened with some of the stuff I have joined, from anime communities to gaming network sites that wanted to overthrow FileFront from their position. The main problem with all of these sites is that sometimes you never hear from the person who started the whole project, nobody does anything to keep the website and forums active and in the end you just stop caring because it’s not worth it, you know it won’t go anywhere anyway so why spend more time on it? Other reasons might be sudden changes in ranks and another person, a friend of the owner for example gets thrown in as a co-leader without the team being consulted with, said person might be pisspoor at leadership and morale goes down which in the end leads to most of your staff just quitting and instead doing other things.

Remember MikuMusic and AnimeAlliance? It started out as a great idea with a small team of people working together, however many of the team members and members in general that were active just upped and disappeared completely, the structure of the staff eventually began falling and in the end there was no structure at all, which leads to arguments and disagreements among things between the people trying to run the whole thing, this is some of what killed AnimeAlliance in the first place, along with the fact that we had no future at all with the project because people rejected joining, and if they did join they normally disappeared again too quickly, it’s not really fun to finally find people to help out with projects for them just to disappear shortly after, never logging in to the forums, IRC or replying to their mail. In the end we decided to stop the whole thing, it was a small argument that ensued it but because of the poor structure and such it was for the best after all, no need to spend more time and especially money to try and run something that will never work out because nobody wants to help out in the starting phase.

I still am a person who loves being a part of communities, either joining them while they are very active and eventually try and join the team running there or start-up forums and websites because it’s more fun to see a website grow and grow until it becomes huge and wide-known. However this is not always the case, websites and everything might seem great on the outside but when it comes to the internal, like staff and such there is always a bloody hellhole. Structure can go to shit and nobody really listens to each other. When I say structure it’s pretty clear, there MUST be a leader that oversees operations and makes sure everything goes smoothly, underneath the leader there is always some supervisors that can keep an even closer look so the leader is able to focus on more important things. This is what many websites and communities lacks which in the end leads to their downfall, another thing is to consult with the rest of the team or ESPECIALLY the leaders of the website before pulling other people into it, especially if these people are of no use or of little use to the website and community in general. People sometimes pull in people just because they apply without thinking about quality of what the person does.

Teamwork is what makes a website and community run, structure in the teamwork is what makes the teamwork run. People listening to supervisors and leaders is also viable for a website to run smoothly. If you lack these things it will be a hell for new talent to join, they will see the structure is poor and decide to just leave. I might seem like a real asshole most of the time but I am also able to work in a team as long as the team actually has structure and people are not just blind sheep doing whatever the fuck they want instead of listening to everyone in the team, or at least the people that are part of the leadership/administration.

Some Figures For Sale

Sunday, 24 April, 2011

Since they previously only have had a small spot on my main website I am now making a blog entry for them instead. I am selling about 3 or 4 figurines, varying from scaled ones to a cute Mameshiki one. Mind you that one of these figures are 18+, the Koihime Musõ one!

Koihime Musõ Figurine – $90
Komaki Manaka (To Heart 2) – $50
Hinata from Keroro Gunsou – $90
Remilia Scarlet – $60

All of the figurines are in good standing, the Remilia and Hinata one has been displayed but in a smokefree area and not in direct sunlight. They are both perfect, however the Hinata one has a loose skirt, it has been like that since I took it out of the package and therefore I will consider it a manufacturer error. If you are interested please contact me at shashi@rumia.co.uk.  Shipping is paid by the person who buys the item, I will ship them NON-REGISTERED and without any Insurance because this is blood expensive from Norway, but if the buyer requests this and is willing to pay for it I will find the rates for this kind of shipping too.
